The Lotus and The Bee
The lotus is a symbol of beauty, prosperity and fertility. It germinates in the mud of a pond or pool, rises through the dark water, tosses on the surface with the winds, and is drawn inexorably toward the fiery sun. St. John Chrysostom is quoted to have said: "The bee is more honored than other animals, not because she labours, but because she labours for others." This photograph of a bee labouring to make honey out of a lotus blossom is particularly appropriate for doctors labouring, sometimes under duress, to make life better for our patients.
